Saint Joachim and Saint Anne - Parents of the Virgin Mary and Grandparents of Jesus Christ

Saint Joachim and Saint Anne were the parents of the Virgin Mary and the grandparents of Jesus Christ. According to Christian tradition, they were an elderly couple who remained barren for more than twenty years before the miraculous birth of Mary. Their lives exemplify persevering faith and trust in God.

Life and Origin

Saint Joachim and Saint Anne were the parents of the Virgin Mary and, consequently, the grandparents of Jesus Christ. According to Christian tradition and apocryphal texts, particularly the Protoevangelium of James, both were practicing Jews who lived in Jerusalem, near the Pool of Bethesda.

According to traditional sources, Joachim was descended from the royal house of David, belonging to the royal lineage of Israel. Saint Anne, in turn, was the daughter of Mathan, a priest from Bethlehem, of the tribe of Levi, and was a native of Bethlehem. This dual lineage was theologically significant, as it established a direct connection between Jesus and the messianic prophecies of the Old Testament.

The Miracle of Mary's Conception

One of the most striking aspects of the story of Joachim and Anne is the long period of barrenness they faced. For more than twenty years, the couple was unable to have children, which, for the Jews of that time, was considered a sign of the lack of blessing and grace of God.

One day, when Joachim was bringing his offerings to the Temple of Jerusalem, he was rebuked by a man named Reuben (possibly a priest or scribe). Reuben argued that, because he did not procreate, Joachim had no right to present his offerings in the Temple. Humiliated and troubled by these words, Joachim decided to withdraw into the desert.

For forty days and forty nights, Joachim pleaded with God through tears and fasting, asking Him to grant him descendants. At the same time, Saint Anne also spent days in prayer, asking God for the grace of motherhood. Tradition relates that, when Joachim returned from his spiritual retreat, he met Anne before the famous Golden Gate of Jerusalem, where they kissed as a sign of reconciliation and renewed hope.

Months after Joachim's return, Saint Anne gave birth to Mary. The child was raised with the loving care of her father and the devoted attention of her mother, in their home near the Pool of Bethesda.

Mary's Education and Dedication

Joachim and Anne, grateful for the blessing they received, devoted themselves to raising Mary with extraordinary love and devotion. Aware of their daughter's special nature, they educated her in the ways of faith and virtue, preparing her for the unique role she would play in the divine plan.

According to Christian tradition, when Mary was three years old, Joachim and Anne, as a sign of thanksgiving to God, took her to the Temple of Jerusalem to consecrate her to His service, as they had promised in their prayers. Mary remained in the Temple until she was twelve years old, during which time she received religious instruction and learned domestic arts from her mother before her dedication to the service of the Lord.

Tradition relates that Saint Anne lived to be eighty years old, while the apocryphal texts make no other specific references to Joachim after Mary was presented in the Temple.

Theological and Spiritual Significance

Saint Joachim and Saint Anne hold a special place in Christian theology, not only as Mary’s parents, but also as figures who exemplify fundamental Christian virtues. Their story is often interpreted as a testimony to the faithfulness of God to His promises and to the power of persevering prayer.

Theologically, Joachim and Anne are seen as crucial instruments in the divine plan of salvation. Their unwavering faith in the face of adversity and their willingness to dedicate their daughter to God are considered exemplary. As Mary’s parents, they played a fundamental role in raising and educating the one who would become the Mother of God, thus helping prepare the way for the Incarnation of Christ.

Veneration and Devotion

Devotion to Mary’s parents is very ancient in the Christian East. In the West, the cult of Saint Anne dates back to the 8th century, when, in the year 710, her relics were taken from the Holy Land to Constantinople, from where they were distributed to many churches in the West. The largest collection of Saint Anne's relics is found in the Church of Saint Anne in Düren, Germany.

Over the centuries, the Catholic Church and the Orthodox churches have commemorated Joachim and Anne on different liturgical dates. The iconography of the meeting of Joachim and Anne before the Golden Gate had great significance in Christian tradition, symbolizing the moment when they received the promise of Mary's birth.

In the 12th century, the Crusaders built a church in Jerusalem, near the Pool of Bethesda, dedicated to Saint Anne, on the site where it was traditionally believed the home of Mary's parents had stood. This basilica still exists and is an important pilgrimage site.

Legacy

The example of the life of Saint Joachim and Saint Anne continues to inspire Christians as a model of faith, patience, and trust in God. Their story shows how persevering prayer and submission to the divine will can lead to extraordinary miracles and blessings. As the grandparents of Jesus Christ, their importance in the history of Christian salvation is fundamental and continues to be celebrated by the Church to this day.
